Common design challenges

You’re not alone! I see a lot of the same design challenges when talking with clients. Although at first it can feel overwhelming, there are usually a few simple ways to resolve them. Take a look at some of the common challenges that occur and what the solutions are.

Limited space

To maximise space, use multi-functional furniture and incorporate storage. Light colours and mirror can make a room feel more spacious. Consider shelving rather than cabinetry to keep the space visually open.

Awkward room layout

Create a focal point to draw attention away from awkward corners. Make use of area rugs to define different zones within the room.

Insufficient lighting

Incorporate a mix of ambient, task and accent lighting. Use floor and table lamps, pendant lights and wall sconces to balance the lighting in the room. Consider the use of sheer curtains to allow natural light to filter in but keeping a sense of privacy.

Choosing a colour scheme

If you’re hesitant about choosing colours for the space, start with a neutral base and add accents of colour through accessories and textiles to make it easier to change over time.

Balancing style and function

Selecting furniture and decor items that serve a purpose while aligning with the design aesthetic. Don’t rush into decisions, take your time and choose quality pieces that are going to work with your design and are also functional.
